Applicants must be in possession of:

Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications

the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) from the Faculty of Health Sciences in an area of study which should be directly related to the area in which the research is to be carried out or
a Bachelor's degree obtained with at least a Second Class (Honours) in a discipline deemed by the Board as being closely related to the area of study in which the research is to be carried out or
a qualification deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be equivalent to the qualifications listed in (a) and (b).

During the first year of the Course, students may be required to undergo an occupational health assessment so as to ascertain that they are fit for work which may bring them in contact with the clinical environment. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.

This programme aims to stimulate you to further your postgraduate studies and increase your knowledge and skill level in an area of physiotherapy. The main aims of this programme are to develop in you an in-depth understanding and advanced practical skills in a specialised area in physiotherapy, the ability to apply research methodology in a particular area of research, and a heightened analytical and critical reflective capacity in the chosen specialised area of physiotherapy.

HSC5111	Research Methods for Health Care Professionals	10 ECTS
PHT5030*	Dissertation	80 ECTS
* Study-unit HSC5111 starts in Semester 2 of academic year 2024-25 (February 2025) and continues up to the end of Semester 1 of academic year 2025-26 (January 2026). * Work on the dissertation is expected to start in Semester 2 of academic year 2024-25 (February 2025) and continue up to the end of Semester 1 of academic year 2027-28 (January 2028).

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

Apply acquired research skills and knowledge to your clinical practice.
Carry out a research project and produce results which are publishable.
Communicate and interact with clinical colleagues in physiotherapy and other professions.
Show an understanding of research designs and the ability to formulate research questions and draw conclusions from studies concerned with improvement of functions in persons with movement challenges.
Communicate the findings of studies to others concerned within the scientific community of physiotherapy.
Proceed to professional employment or further studies in physiotherapy at doctoral level through research and clinical skills base.
